GILLESPIE PARK/ROSEMARY

The Gillespie Park area which is on the northern side of downtown was named after John Gillespie who created the first golf course in the US right here in Sarasota. It is a residential area that surrounds a large park with playground facilities, a small pond and a covered picnic area. These homes have become popular for rehabilitating as many have historical designations dating back to the early 1920s. The Rosemary District just to the west is currently undergoing commercial revitalization and has become home to some fabulous restaurants and entrepreneurial business owners.

Just south of downtown off Osprey Ave. lies Laurel Park. When first built in the 1920’s it housed downtown business owners, city officials and circus performers. It is made up of Craftsman bungalow and Mediterranean revival style homes.
