HISTORY
Having owned a Longboat Key home for the past twenty six years I can tell you first hand how beautiful this 11 mile long barrier island really is. John Ringling set the precedence back in 1925 when he sought to develop all Longboat Key Real Estate into a showpiece that would include a magnificently landscaped boulevard running the length of the island. His grand plan included placing most all Longboat Key Homes and Longboat Key Condos behind lush palm lined greenways. Today’s Longboat Key is a mixture of condominiums, private Longboat Key club estates and single family homes whose residents are primarily here for a few months over the winter. Although shopping is limited on Longboat, the plazas do offer the basics as well as upscale shops and fine dining. This certainly meets the essential needs of all Longboat Key residents who strongly protect the character of the island. There is a limited supply of short term accommodations and commercial developments as well as public beach accesses. This leaves Longboat Key beach typically quiet for most the residences that own their own private accesses. Longboat Key lies in two counties and is its own town which has its own elected council. It has few named subdivisions and one private golf club, The Longboat Key Club, which runs along the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay. It offers homes and condominiums with both spectacular golf course and gulf or bay views. Longboat Key has many areas that offer homes along canals with direct sailboat access to the bay.
